Loneliness is a critical factor that severely affects the physical and mental well-being of young adults. Utilizing generative AI chatbots to provide social support and companionship offers a promising innovative solution to mitigate loneliness. Guided by the Stimulus–Organism–Response (SOR) theoretical framework, this study develops a research model to examine the mechanisms through which social support from AI chatbots influences loneliness. The model proposes that social support significantly enhances users’ sense of companionship and social presence, and that the interaction between anthropomorphism and social support shapes these perceptions. Furthermore, companionship and social presence strengthen human–AI rapport, which in turn reduces loneliness. A 2×2 between-subjects experimental design was employed to empirically analyze the differential impacts of social support type (emotional vs. informational) and anthropomorphism level (high vs. low) on young adults’ loneliness. Data collected from 140 participants were used to validate the proposed hypotheses.
